BREXIT - GERMANY CALLS ON BRITAIN TO 'COME TO ITS SENSES'

 Filenews 23 November 2021

Germany is calling on Britain to "come to its senses" and honour its commitments under the Brexit deal it has signed with the European Union, resolving disputes over Northern Ireland.

London has repeatedly threatened to trigger Article 16, an extraordinary handcuff in the Northern Ireland Protocol, if negotiations with Brussels fail. Such a move would trigger a trade war between the European Union and the United Kingdom.

"Dear friends in London and Great Britain, please come to your senses," German European Affairs Minister Michael Rot told reporters ahead of a meeting with his European counterparts in Brussels.

The German minister warned that "the situation is not a game".

"We want, get (!), to work together as partners and friends. We don't want to fight all the time about what we have agreed," he said.

The European Commission's chief negotiator Maroš Šefkovic said on Sunday that the European Union and Britain have made progress in the talks and that solutions can be found if London increases efforts.
