An interstate agreement with Israel for the installation of a state-of-the-art Surveillance System for the guarding of the green line was signed on Thursday by the Republic of Cyprus.
Speaking to Philenews, the spokesman of the National Guard, Christos Pieri, said that: "the Surveillance System will operate 24 hours a day and will send a picture, both to the UN, as well as to the Police, the Fire Brigade and other services of the state on issues of crime, smuggling, illegal immigration, fires and other issues".
Mr. Pieri also mentioned that the installation of the System will begin immediately and will be continuously strengthened, while the project is expected to be completed within a period of three years. The cost of the project is €27.5 million, he added.
He also noted that the personnel who will be trained to operate the system have been selected.
The interstate agreement for the installation of the Surveillance System was made in the context of a visit by the Director of the International Defence Cooperation Directorate of the ULA of the State of Israel (SIBAT) Brigadier General Yair Kulas to Cyprus.
It is also noted that in the context of the Israeli official's visit, a bilateral meeting took place with the General Director of the Ministry of Defence, Andreas P. Loukas, where issues related to the relations between the two countries in the field of Defence and Security and ways to strengthen cooperation were discussed.
