TRAFFIC CAMERA OFFENDERS - SPECIAL LIST TO BE KEPT TO TRY AND AID SERVING OF FINES

Filenews 30 October 2021 - by Michalis Hadjivasilis

A special list of those who will not be identified in order to be served by the extrajudicial cameras, is being prepared by the Traffic Police, so that if all efforts fail, the violations will not be forgotten.

The list of cameras, as it will be called, will be kept by the Traffic Police and the names of all those who are not identified within the 180-day deadline will be placed in it, in order to be served the extrajudicial. A separate list will be kept for Turkish Cypriots which will be delivered to the barricades so that when they go in and out to and from the occupied territories, they will be checked if they owe to fines of the cameras and they will be asked to pay them.

As explained to "F" the assistant director of the Traffic Department at the Police Headquarters Harris Evripidou, according to the legislation passed by the Parliament, a deadline of 180 days will be given to identify an offending driver who was reported by the cameras. Initially, the extrajudicial document will be sent by post to the address of the offender. If he does not receive it, there will be a second attempt. If this attempt is also unsuccessful, then the managing company with authorized dealers will have the right to try to locate the driver (another two times). If these efforts also fail, then the Police will undertake in a last-ditch effort to serve the extrajudicial. If it is not possible to locate the driver, then an envelope is formed and it remains open. The name of the offender will be placed in the list of cameras which will be sent to airports, ports, police stations and elsewhere (perhaps even to the Citizen Service Centers) so that if the affected person turns to the Police for some service or attempts to travel, then the data will be compared with the list and if he is identified, then the Police will be informed to serve him the extrajudicial.

As far as tourists are concerned, Mr. Evripidou mentioned that according to the legislation recently passed by the Parliament, an effort will be made to locate them before they leave Cyprus. On the issue, discussions will begin with the Association of Owners of Rental Vehicles in order to find the right balance and not leave Cyprus without paying their extrajudicial documents.
