ON THE STREETS THE CAMERAS - THE SIGNS AND FINES

Filenews 25 October 2021 - by Andria Demetriou

As of today, on a pilot basis, the photo-labelling system, the well-known cameras of the Traffic Police, are being implemented, which will proceed to the recording of traffic violations.

Speaking to philenews, Assistant Traffic Police Headquarters Manager Haris Evripidou said that four fixed cameras have been installed on Griva Digeni Street and Demosthenes Severi in Nicosia, while there are also four mobile phones, which will be installed according to schedule throughout Cyprus.

As Mr Evripidou pointed out, at this stage and for a period of two months, letters of formal notice will be issued to offenders, while after the end of this period, i.e. from 1 January, fines will normally be imposed depending on the traffic offence.

For traffic lights violation the fine is €300, for exceeding a speed limit depends on the speed limit of the road and how much this is exceeded by the driver, while for violation of the stop line the fine is set at €25. At the same time, if the driver is not wearing his belt or helmet or if he is holding a mobile phone, the appropriate fine will be imposed.

Asked about whether more traffic cameras will be added along the way, either fixed or mobile, Mr. Evripidou noted that during this first pilot phase, which will last for about three months, there will be another 16 mobile cameras and in total they will reach 20, while by the end of the period there will be 90 fixed and mobile cameras.

Finally, Mr. Evripidou pointed out that the public are recommended to proceed with the procedures for the transfer or registration of their vehicles, because the fines issued will be sent to the owner of the vehicle and a period of 15 days will be offered to inform the authorities about who was driving the vehicle at the time of the violation.
