In the context of the sequencing of new strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the Ministry of Health informs that the specialized analysis of 279 samples that tested positive for the virus during the period September-October has been successfully completed. It is noted that 185 samples were investigated in a specialized laboratory of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and 94 in a private clinical laboratory in Cyprus, with which the Ministry of Health maintains cooperation.
As shown by the specialized tests, in all 279 samples the Delta mutation was detected (B.1.617.2).
In addition to the examination carried out in laboratories in Cyprus and abroad through ECDC, all 279 samples were sent for thorough genetic analysis to the Laboratory of Biotechnology and Molecular Ecology of the University of Cyprus. During the analysis, the Delta+ variant (AY.4.2) was identified in two samples.
Although the characteristics of the Delta+ mutation (AY.4.2) indicate that it increases the transmissibility of the virus, their detection in Cyprus has not, at this stage, caused a serious deterioration in epidemiological and hospital indicators.
The Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the issue of new variants of the virus, continuing the specialized sample testing both through ECDC and in Cyprus. The aim is to identify new strains early and take measures to limit their spread in the community.
