BUS AND TRUCK POLICE INSPECTIONS THIS WEEK

 Filenews 11 October 2021

The week of enlightenment and policing with roadside checks on trucks and buses began today, Monday, October 11th. The Pancyprian roadside inspections will last until next Sunday, October 17th, while they will be carried out in parallel and at a European level, within the framework of the cooperation of the Cyprus Police with the European Police Traffic Police Network - ROADPOL. The aim of the whole effort is to reduce serious and fatal injuries in road collisions.

The chances of causing serious or even fatal injuries in cases of road collisions involving trucks or buses are increased, mainly due to the size of such heavy vehicles, but also because of the particularities of their driving. That is why, for driving trucks and buses, it is required to have a special driving license, after specialized training.

There is an increased risk of serious and fatal injuries in road collisions due to the load usually carried by trucks, either because of the characteristics of the load, or because of its incorrect positioning and transport. The risk of carrying a load does not arise only in the event of a traffic collision. The danger exists also from the transport of cargo itself, since the unsafe transport of cargo, in case of movement or even fall, may be the cause of a traffic collision, endangering the physical integrity, even the very life, of persons moving on the road network, as well as of the occupants themselves.

Among the main obligations of truck drivers during the transport of cargo, are the control of loads that protrude from the length of the trucks, the control of the height of the cargo, the coverage of a load that can be dispersed on the road during its transportation, as well as the observance of the regulations and protection measures for the safe transport of dangerous cargo.

At the same time, however, other road users, drivers of vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, should be aware of the difficulties and peculiarities of driving heavy vehicles, such as lorries and buses, so as not to hinder their smooth movement on the road. Road safety is everyone's responsibility and we all have to use the road network responsibly and with respect for life.
