NEW SMS SCAM RELATED TO BANKS

 Filenews 16 September 2021

Particular attention is advised to the public by the Police regarding online fraud related to Banking and Credit Institutions.

It has been observed, in particular, that misleading messages are sent to citizens, through which they are asked to choose the electronic link - link - that refers to the messages, in order to solve a problem that occurs in their bank accounts.

The electronic link connects citizens to fake websites that resemble the websites of Banking / Credit Institutions.

As a result, the perpetrators of fraud gain access to citizens' bank accounts via the internet (e-banking – i-banking) and are able to extract large amounts of money from the accounts or even steal bank and other personal data of citizens.

The public is asked to be particularly careful and not to disclose to any person their personal details and passwords of their bank accounts, since no Bank / Credit institution will ever ask for their customer passwords.

Citizens are also asked to make sure that any messages they receive by phone or e-mail are true and have indeed been sent by a Bank or Credit Institution where they hold an account, before proceeding to any connection to the website of such institutions through an electronic link mentioned in the relevant messages.

Furthermore, they should ensure that any website with which they have been linked is the authentic website of the Bank / Credit Institution with which they cooperate.
