NAMES FOR EXTREME WEATHER EVENTS IN CYPRUS FROM 1 October

 Filenews 30 September 2021

On October 1, 2021, the naming process of extreme weather systems affecting the Eastern Mediterranean, for the period October 2021-September 2022, is inaugurated by the Trilateral national cooperation between Greece, Cyprus and Israel, through their Meteorological Services and within the framework of the resolutions of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), as well as the European body, which coordinates the network of National Meteorological Services (EUMETNET) on technical issues.

The list of names selected and to be used in alphabetical order was drawn up jointly between the services reflecting the linguistic idiom of the three countries.

The names for 2021-22 are:

Athina, Ballos, Carmel, Diomedes, Elpis, Filippos, Genesis, Helios, Irit, Kalypso, Lavi, Meliti, Nikias, Ora, Paris, Raphael, Semeli, Thomas, Urania, Vion, Xenios, Yasmin, Zefyros.

The attribution of a name to an intense weather phenomenon will be decided by representatives of the Meteorological Services during weekly (or more frequent whenever necessary) meetings.

During these, all available information from numerical weather models and observational data will be used to estimate the evolution of the weather phenomenon. The aim of this action is to raise public awareness through the Mass Media and to help national emergency services to inform about the passage of severe weather phenomena that may be accompanied by multiple impacts, thus ensuring the protection of human lives and property.
