Appalling photos circulating in recent days on social media, showing the killing of a dog that found a horrible end after being left to die helpless and forgotten without food and water in the places of temporary detention of dogs in the community council of Vrysoulla in Famagusta district.
In a statement, the Green Movement said that after its intervention, an investigation was launched by the district's Animal Police. At the same time, it is noted that according to the law, all local government bodies are obliged to maintain appropriate and approved detention facilities for stray animals. However, not only are they not observed, but several places are hellish and animals there often die.
Anthi Mouzouri, coordinator of the Action Group for the Rights of Animals of the Movement, stated that "this incident has particularly worried us, as as a Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation, we had recently conducted an investigation into whether the law on the maintenance of approved detention facilities is being observed by the Municipalities and Community Authorities. With disappointment we revealed that very few spaces are approved, while several Municipalities / Communities do not even own places of detention and this is particularly found in the Community Authorities.
It also called on the Veterinary Services, which are the competent authorities to check and approve the detention facilities for strays, to finally carry out these checks to stop these cruel acts against animals.
He also asked the competent authorities to fully investigate the incident and to deliver justice for this soul that had this painful outcome.
Finally, he said that as a Movement of Ecologists – Citizens' Cooperation, it will hold the necessary meetings with the stakeholders to prevent similar incidents. He also called on citizens who know about such unsuitable places of detention to report it immediately to the Competent Authorities (Police and Veterinary Services) or to contact the Movement of Ecologists-Citizens' Cooperation to take action themselves.
