A female sergeant of the Cyprus Police is included in the ranks of the Frontex Agency. Her employment in the organization is done by granting permission from the Cyprus Police. It is considered important for Cyprus since as a member-state of the EU it also contributes to the efforts to address the major challenges faced by the Union, mainly in matters of illegal immigrants. In addition, the experiences gained by the member of the Police are considered very important for his professional development, who will have the opportunity to gain know-how and experiences from her European colleagues.
The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, is today an essential part of Europe's efforts to safeguard the area of freedom, security and justice. Its support at the external borders helps to ensure freedom of movement without internal border controls.
Frontex has three strategic objectives: To reduce the vulnerability of the external borders based on comprehensive situational awareness, to ensure the security, protection and proper functioning of the EU's borders, and to design and maintain the capacities of the European Border and Coast Guard. The operational footprint at the EU's external borders will be supported by regional offices located across Europe.
According to the plans, as was duly mentioned in the 'F', in the coming years, Frontex will have 10,000 border and coast guard officers, in order to assist European countries in border control and migration management. With its own border guards and the ability to rely on its own equipment, the Agency will be a reliable partner for national authorities across Europe to address a variety of challenges at their borders, rather than simply acting to respond to new emergencies. It should also play a greater role in managing the increasing flows of legal travellers at the EU's external borders and will strengthen its role in the fight against cross-border crime.
