CIVIL ENGINEERS ASK FOR CERTIFICATION FOR REGULAR INSPECTION OF BUILDINGS

 Filenews 28 September 2021

It is imperative to institutionalize the certificate of regular inspection of buildings and to subsidize the anti-seismic upgrade in combination with the energy upgrade, says in a statement the Association of Civil Engineers of Cyprus, SPOLMIC, on the occasion of the earthquake in Crete.

SPOLMIK reiterates its concern regarding the static adequacy and safety of old buildings in our country, the possibility of a similar seismic activity, pointing out that their old age, as well as their inadequate maintenance, combined with the fact that a large number of them have been designed and constructed before the implementation of the Cyprus Antiseismic Regulation in 1994, significantly increases the risk, in contrast to new buildings.

SPOLMIC also mentions that after the accession to the EU, huge amounts of European funds were given for the energy upgrade of buildings without this, as it says, being accompanied by the corresponding anti-seismic upgrade or control of their anti-seismic sufficiency.

He also mentions that he has already contacted the Technical Chamber of Cyprus and has expressed his readiness to assist in a possible transition of Civil Engineers to the area affected by the earthquakes in Greece, sending its members to carry out aftershock inspections, within the framework of the "Enceladus" plan of the Civil Defence.
