BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND - INCREASED POLICE PRESENCE AND RECOMMENDED SECURITY MEASURES

 Filenews 30 September 2021

In view of the Bank holiday [October 1st[ weekend, the Police will take particularly increased measures, with priority being given to the safety of traffic on the road network and the protection of citizens and its property.

Traffic Police Measures

Due to the increased traffic that is expected to be observed on the road network, the Police will take additional measures to prevent road collisions, alleviate traffic and provide every possible assistance to road users. Therefore, the Traffic Police Headquarters, as well as the District Traffic Departments, will be on the spot.

The measures of the Traffic Police include intensification of motorized patrols and increased presence of members of the Traffic Police on motorways, interurban roads and especially on the main roads leading to the coast and the mountains.

With a view to ensuring a bloodless three-day period, particular emphasis will be placed on offences that are proven to contribute to fatal and serious road collisions, such as speeding, dangerous overtaking, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to wear a seat belt or a protective helmet.

In this context, the Police appeal once again to drivers to be particularly careful and to comply with traffic signals and the instructions of the on-duty police officers.

Crime prevention

The three-day period is considered to be periods of high risk for burglaries and thefts, since the cunning take advantage of the absence of the omens. That is why the Police take additional measures to prevent crime and especially offences against property, such as burglaries, thefts, robberies, etc., with pedestrian and motorized patrols, in the cities, but also in the countryside.

Apart from the measures of the Police, the public's attention is drawn to take preventive measures to guard his property before leaving his home, as well as at the place of his vacation.

On the beach the public is urged

  • To carry only the necessary amount of money and avoid the transfer of high-value items, such as jewellery, watches, cameras, mobile phones, etc.
  • In case such objects are transported, in no case should they be left unattended, while where possible, people should cooperate with other bathers for the mutual surveillance of their property.

In the hotel or tourist apartment

  • Preference should be given to hotels or tourist accommodation, where there are measures to protect the property of customers.
  • Each time the residents leave their room, make sure that the windows and doors are closed and secured.
  • Do not carry with them money or valuables that they will not need at their exit.
  • Valuables can be left for safekeeping, in the reception area or in another specially designed area of the hotel or accommodation.

Homeowners

  • When they are absent from home, do not leave any clues that betray their absence.
  • To cooperate with neighbours they trust, for the surveillance of their homes.
  • Do not leave the keys on the locks, not even on the inner side of the door.
  • Do not leave exposed money, jewellery, important documents or other valuables and, where possible, keep them in a safe.
  • Make sure that they have secured doors and windows and make use of appropriate lights.
  • If they have an alarm system and/or a closed circuit television, make sure that they have been switched on, they are operational and that they have not been damaged.

Shop owners

  • Leave open and empty the cash registers of their stores
  • Do not leave large amounts of money in precarious places
  • Do not leave their property exposed
  • Have arranged for the installation of alarm systems
  • To check that these systems are modern, reliable, operational and have not suffered any damage

In busy places/public streets:

  • The public is urged to be especially careful when walking or being on busy streets/public places.
  • Money and credit cards to be placed in the front pockets of clothes.
  • For women carrying bags, do not place in them all the money, credit cards, passports, etc. What you will not need on your way out, it is preferable to leave in an insured place in the hotel or in the place of stay.
  • The bag, in which valuables are found, is better to be mounted in such a way that there is constant visual contact with it. (e.g. across the chest, to the front of the body).

Fire prevention

As far as fires are concerned, in cooperation with the Fire Brigade, it is announced that the Police will take strict measures to prevent them. The Police warns that it will be relentless with regard to the offenders and persons, who deliberately proceed to light a fire in the countryside and stresses once again that non-compliance and compliance with the relevant Legislation is an offence.

In general, the public is urged to be alert and to cooperate closely with the Police and, if necessary, to immediately inform the Police or to contact the Citizen's Hotline at 1460.
