THE LABOUR MARKET IN THE NEW ERA - WHICH PROFESSIONS ARE AT RISK IN THE COMING YEARS?

 Filenews 31 August 2021

The steps of technology are increasing towards the simplification of people's everyday life. One of these, however, seems to be the replacement of human labour by robots.

Machines are already doing things that we thought only humans could do. They compose for example original music and beat professional players in board games with creative moves.

The University of Oxford has published a study that concludes that some jobs that humans do today will be covered by robots and automation programs.

Specifically, in 2013, a study by academics at the University of Oxford entitled "The Future of Employment" looked at 702 common professions and found that some jobs – for example tele-sellers, tax consultants and referees – are at greater risk than others, including psychologists, dentists and doctors.

The Bank of England's chief economist had said millions of jobs in the US and UK could be filled by robots.

It is therefore very difficult to predict what will happen in the future. We need to be wary of whether computers and robots can change the world of work.

But which professions are most at risk?

According to the Guardian, automation is not synonymous with job losses. Jobs will not disappear completely but rather, they will be redefined. Of course, "from the employee's point of view there is not much difference" between the disappearance of work and the redefinition.

So which professions are most at risk?

Martin Ford, author of "Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future," explains that the jobs most at risk are those that "are at some level of routine, repetitive and predictable."

Telemarketing, for example, has a 99% chance of automation according to The Future of Employment. The cashier also has a 97% chance.

According to an earlier report by Deloitte, more than 100 000 jobs in the legal sector have a good chance of being automated in the next 20 years.

Fast food cooks also face an 81% chance of being replaced by robots. Taxi drivers have an 89% chance of being replaced by robots as well.

Which professions are least at risk from robots?

Doctors are among those professions that are less at risk of being replaced by robots in the future.

In addition, plumbers, therapists, repairers, occupational therapists, social workers, dieticians and nutritionists, nurses and clergy.
