Filenews 30 August 2021 - by Eleftheria Paizanos

With the return of taxpayers from their summer holidays, the submission of employee and self-employed returns for the 2020 tax year has also picked up the pace. Within 14 days, the number of tax returns filed electronically with the Tax Department increased by 12,610.

According to data obtained by "F", a total of 37,710 income statements were submitted. Of these, 34,380 were submitted by employees and 3,333 were self-employed. Specifically, out of the total number of tax returns submitted, 29,650 were submitted definitively, while 8,060 applications are in temporary receipt. Compared to the data 14 days ago, the number of tax returns permanently filed increased by 10,540 and by 2,060 income returns that are in temporary receipt. It is worth noting that with the temporary storage of their tax return, taxpayers can take care of it again at a later time, while after the final submission of the tax return, no changes can be made by the taxpayer. According to the data of the Department of Taxation, of the 29,650 taxpayers who have definitively submitted their tax returns, 27,080 are employees and 2,570 are self-employed.

Moreover, the 8,060 tax returns that are being processed, i.e. in temporary receipt, 7,300 are for employees and 760 for self-employed persons. It is recalled that the obligation to submit a tax return is imposed on individuals whose gross total income for the year 2020 is equal to or greater than €19,500.

The exemption of filing tax returns to those with incomes up to €19,500 was determined by decree as the legislation provides for the submission of income returns by all taxpayers regardless of income. The last day of filing the tax return is November 30th. It is noted that taxpayers who submit their tax returns late will be subject to a fine of €100. The same financial penalty applies to those who have submitted their tax return but are in temporary receipt and the deadline given by the Tax Department has expired. Also, taxpayers have until September 30th to pay the final tax (self-taxation) for the 2020 tax year.
