STRIKE CONTINUES AT LIMASSOL PORT

Cyprus Mail 12 August 2021 - by Stavros Nikolaou

In a second day of labour unrest at Limassol port, DP World Limassol employees and union representatives remain outside the terminal on Thursday morning as the labour ministry called on the company to suspend the four dismissals that prompted the strike.

Workers walked out on Wednesday afternoon, a week after their collective agreement was signed following strike action. They said the strike this time is indefinite.

The new labour unrest was sparked after the company which manages the general cargo and cruise terminals at Limassol port decided to make four employees redundant.

Union leaders called move “an act of revenge” by the company.

On Wednesday, there were problems at the general cargo and terminal, as the workers’ strike affected ships, including one carrying six horses, which had returned from an international competition.  Eventually the strikers agreed the six horses could be brought off the ship.

The department of labour relations of the ministry has written to the company asking them to suspend the dismissals and inviting the two sides to enter into a dialogue.

It is noted that the strike does not affect the Eurogate container terminal, which is operating normally.
