The Union of Cyprus Municipalities calls once again on the Government and parliamentary parties to demonstrate now the required commitment to the goal of achieving a functional Reform of Local Self-Government and to take all necessary actions for the adoption, implementation and smooth transition to the new system of Local Democracy.
In today's announcement, on the occasion of the special session it held, which examined the course of the Reform of Local Self-Government, in the light of the recent meetings of the competent Minister of Interior with the Leaders of the Parliamentary Parties, the Union of Municipalities states that it will seek urgent meetings with the competent Minister of Interior and the Parliamentary groups in order to re-emphasize and face-to-face the urgent need to vote for the reform.
As he notes, "the current model of Local Government has long since completed its cycle", adding that "it is time to move on to the adoption of all those measures that will make local government a real local government, with guaranteed resources and clear roles of responsibilities and rights".
He also adds that "the Reform of Local Self-Government aims to provide the best possible quality of services to citizens, at the lowest possible cost, thus ensuring the improvement of the quality of life in our country, which should be a common goal for all", adding that "the only winner will be the citizen".
