KYRIAKIDES - SIGNED A CONTRACT WITH NOVAVAX FOR 200m VACCINE DOSES

 Filenews 16 August 2021

Commissioner for Health Stella Kyriakides today signed the EU contract with Novavax for the supply of up to 200 million more doses of vaccines between 2021 - 2023, after this vaccine has been tested and approved by the European Medicines Agency as safe and effective.

According to the Commission, member states will also be able to donate vaccines to lower- or middle-income countries or redirect them to other European countries.

Following the signing of the contract, the Commissioner said that "we are adding a promising vaccine technology to our portfolio and ensuring their supply for the EU and the planet as we prepare for the coming months".

It is noted that the contract is in addition to the already wide portfolio of vaccines to be produced in Europe, which includes the contracts signed with the companies AstraZeneca, Sanofi-GSK, Janssen Pharmaceutica NV, BioNtech-Pfizer, CureVac, Moderna, as well as the comprehensive exploratory talks with valneva company. In addition, it is another important step towards ensuring that Europe is well prepared to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.

Novavax is a biotechnology company that develops next-generation vaccines for serious infectious diseases. Her vaccine against COVID-19 is already in the process of rolling evaluation by the European Medicines Agency with a view to possible marketing authorisation.

The Commission decided to support this vaccine based on a sound scientific evaluation, the technology used, the company's experience in vaccine development, as well as its production capacity to supply the entire EU.
