New, even more nightmarish dimensions took on many of the fronts that have consumed Greece in recent days.
Despite the enormous efforts of hundreds of firefighters and volunteers by ground and aerial means, the flames are fuelled by the high temperatures prevailing and the strong winds, resulting in reaping. The testimonies of the inhabitants are shocking.
They talk about fires that within a short period of time reached residential areas, swallowing everything they found in their path, houses, businesses, cars. More communities and villages were ordered to evacuate, but several residents refused to give up their properties. The battle with the flames is uneven, as the resurgences do not let the firefighters breathe. The situation was very dangerous until late yesterday.
Especially in Attica strong firefighting forces were trying to stop the course of the fire with the help of aerial means that constantly poured water, in order to stop the advance of the fire towards Parnitha and Athens. According to the Greek Minister of Protection, Nikos Chardalias, yesterday there were 99 new fires, while in total the fire brigades were called to manage 145 fires throughout the country, of which until late at night 57 remained active and under management.
Attica, Evia, Ilia, Laconia and Messinia are at the mercy of the fiery destruction, while the inhabitants of the areas are appealing for assistance from aerial means.
The fires come at a time of intense heat for ten days, the largest in 30 years, with experts stressing that the conditions prevailing today are of particular danger, which will even resemble those that existed in the fire in Mati two years ago.
