GOING TO THE BEACH? HOW TO AVOID THEFTS WHILST YOU ARE THERE

 Filenews 1 August 2021

At a time when the beaches are full of people seeking relaxation and carefreeness, thefts on the beach are a frequent occurrence.  As has been observed, the deft, when bathers enter the sea and their personal belongings remain unattended, act undisturbed.  Therefore, the Police draw the public's attention to take preventive measures to guard their property during their stay on the beach.

The public is encouraged to:

 Transfer to the beach only the necessary amount of money and avoid the transfer of high-value items such as jewellery, watches, cameras, mobile phones, etc.

 If such objects are transported, they should not be left unattended, and where possible, the bather may cooperate with other bathers to monitor each other's property.

 Bags carrying such items should not be left open, as they may attract attention. They should be closed so that their content is not easily understood.

 It is also preferable for many valuables (e.g. mobile phone, wallet) to be safely kept in the car and not in a prominent position, while the car should be locked and parked, where possible, in an insured area. Also, when there is an alarm for this to be activated.

 When there is no other person of our trust, it is preferable to close any  bag with our personal belongings and fasten/lock it to a fixed object on the beach, such as a sunbed or beach umbrella.

 When you are a large group, it is good not to all go into the sea at the same time and in turn someone to supervise the personal belongings of the group.

 When you do not carry a bag with you and carry only your car key and mobile phone, do not leave them exposed and in plain sight. It is good to be placed in a bag or covered e.g. by a beach towel.

 Constantly have the concern of your personal belongings when swimming or playing on the beach.

In general, the public is encouraged, if necessary, to immediately inform the Police or contact the Citizen's Contact Line on 1460.
