Authorities in northern Germany have appealed to thousands of citizens to get the vaccine against Covid-19 again, following a police investigation by authorities that found a Red Cross nurse may have been vaccinating people with saline solution.
The nurse is suspected of administering saline solution instead of genuine doses at a vaccination centre in Friesland in the spring.
According to local authorities, about 8,600 Germans may have been affected.
Although the saline solution is harmless, most people vaccinated in Germany in March and April, when fake vaccinations are suspected, are elderly and at high risk of being infected with Covid.
Police investigator Peter Beer, speaking earlier at a news conference covered by German media, said that based on witness statements there was "a reasonable suspicion of danger."
The nurse's motive, who was not named, was unclear. However, she had expressed skeptical views about vaccines in her social media posts, police investigators said.
It was not immediately clear if the suspect had been arrested or charged in the case. The nurse, according to NDR television station, was handed over to a special unit investigating politically motivated crimes.
