EUROPEAN FUNDS FLOW INTO POLIS CHRYSOCHOUS

In a large number of European funded programs, the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous participates, in order to develop various projects aimed at upgrading its infrastructure, enriching its tourist product and upgrading the quality of life of its citizens.

Information points out that within the framework of the Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Between Greece and Cyprus Interreg 2014-2020, the municipal authority has submitted three proposals, the funding of which amounts to 85% of their cost.

The first proposal concerns the Agora project, with participants the Municipalities of Polis Chrysochous, as the lead partner, and Chania, the Pafos Industrial And Industrial Institute and the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania (MAICh). The aim of the program is to promote municipal markets in centres of sale of local traditional products. The total budget amounts to €1,023,675 and the share of the Municipality of Polis to €417,000.

The main actions of the Project are the complete renovation of the Municipal Market of Polis Chrysochous at a cost of €340,000, the creation of a Demonstration Area for the Production of Traditional Products in the Market of Chania, for €100,000, the creation of a Networking office and Access to Innovation in the Municipality of Polis in cooperation with MAICh, costing €55,000 and the creation of an e-Commerce Platform for traditional products of Polis Chrysochous and Chania, at an expense of €65,000.

The second proposal submitted by the Municipality of Polis concerns the "Senior Routes" project, in which the Municipalities of Thira and Platanias, the Pafos BcCI and the Andros Research Centre also participate.

The aim of the program is to develop a network of certified trails for middle age, focusing on the natural environment and the needs of the local countryside. The project has a budget of approximately €873,000, of which the Municipality accounts for €292,000. The main actions of the project are the construction of the Linear Park along the riverbed of Chrysochous River, for an expense of €267,500.

The Linear Park will be created within the boundaries of the Municipality and the communities of Chrysochos, Goudi, Cholis and Skoulli, with a total length of 12 km and with a total estimated cost of €1.3 million.

Efforts are being made through the District Commander of Pafos to finance the remaining part of the project from the Rural Development Programme.

Other actions of the project are the design of paths and enhancement of flora in Santorini, at a cost of €110,000, the Conference of Hiking Tourism in Santorini for €23,000, the design of paths in the Municipality of Platanias for €20,000  and the promotion of a Trail Network in Andros with an expense of €82,000.

The third proposal of the Municipality of Polis Chrysochous to the funded European programs concerns a program for the development of photovoltaic energy, with participants, in addition to the Municipality of Polis, the TEI of Crete, the Municipality of Minoa Pediada, Crete and the Centre for Innovation, Research and Development of Neapolis University in Cyprus. The aim is to recycle photovoltaic systems and highlight secondary sources of valuable raw materials.

The budget of this project is €621,000 of which the Municipality of Polis will receive €122,000, while its main actions are the development of various studies on the current state of photovoltaics in Greece and Cyprus, the development of an optimal scenario for the recycling of photovoltaic systems and the development of a plan for the creation of a recycling unit for photovoltaic systems.
