The decision of the Republic of Cyprus to host refugees from Afghanistan is welcomed by the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Iosifina Antoniou, with today's announcement, while she suggests that the majority of them to be accommodated will be women and children with their husbands.
As Mrs. Antoniou notes, the decision of the Republic of Cyprus "reflects our sensitivity regarding the plight of refugees, as a country that experienced the refugees of tens of thousands of refugees after Turkey's invasion of Cyprus in 1974".
The Commissioner also points out "that women in Afghanistan, in addition to the violence and crimes that are taking place against all Afghan citizens but also foreign nationals, also face gender-based violence, which is perpetrated by the Taliban and ISIS to an excessive extent against women".
"Therefore, it recommends that the majority of people who will be accommodated in Cyprus should be women and children with their husbands," the statement concludes.
