A controlled explosion to destroy the last CIA military outpost in Afghanistan was carried out by the US.
According to the New York Times, citing US officials, the explosion occurred outside Kabul airport where Eagle Base is located, and as August 31 is approaching - the date on which the Americans must have fled Afghanistan.
The blowing up of the base was intended to ensure that any equipment or files would not fall into the hands of the Taliban.
Eagle Base had been used throughout the 20-year U.S. stay in the Afghanistan conflict. From a small outpost, it evolved into a large afghan force training centre.
"It was an excellent unit," said Mick Mulroy, a former CIA officer who served in Afghanistan. "It was one of the key means the Afghan government used to counter the Taliban over the past 20 years."
Maximum security
Local Afghans knew little about this base, which was extremely secure and designed to make it impossible for enemy troops to access.
Walls reaching 10 meters high were located around the base, while externally there was a metal gate that opened to allow vehicles to enter the area.
As soon as they entered, the cars had to go through three checkpoints where a thorough investigation was being carried out.
