€40 billion FOR THE 'GODS OF FOOTBALL'

 Filenews 30 August 2021

In the staggering sum of €48.5 billion, it is not enough. the global transfer "turnover" for the decade 2011-2020 amounts to about €41.1 billion, according to a study published by FIFA, taking advantage of the data of the TMS system, which was implemented in October 2010 and records all transfer movements in football.

As the data show, the football market was in continuous expansion until 2019, starting at €2.41 billion. in 2011 (first year of implementation of the TMS) and reaching €6.22 billion. in 2019. The economic impact of the pandemic has resulted in the "turnover" shrinking in 2020 to €4.77 billion.

The top 30 places on the list are occupied by European clubs, with Manchester City at the top, followed by Chelsea, Barcelona and PSG (no exact figures are given for each club separately). These 30 clubs, twelve from England, five from Spain, five from Italy, three from Germany, two from France, two from Portugal and one from Russia, have collectively spent 47% of the total amount spent on transfers in the last decade.

On the other hand, two Portuguese clubs, Benfica and Sporting Lisbon, have the largest revenues from footballers' sales in the same period.

A remarkable element of the investigation, which FIFA makes particular reference to, is the increasing percentage of commissions received by transfer intermediaries. According to official data, managers' commissions "soared" from €111.1 million in 2011 to €542.8 million in 2019, i.e. from 4.6% to 8.7% of the total transfer "turnover".
