URSULA - CYPRUS REQUEST EU FIREFIGHTING BASE IN CYPRUS

The issue of the need to establish a rescEU base in Cyprus, which will be beneficial for both the Republic of Cyprus and countries in the region, especially for firefighting incidents, will be transferred to the EU by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

This was reported today to the President of the Republic Nikos Anastasiades, at a meeting they had at 9 a.m. at the Presidential Palace, as part of a two-day visit to Cyprus, in order to deliver the approval of the Recovery and Resilience Plan concerning the Republic of Cyprus.

During their meeting at the Presidential Palace, President Anastasiades and Ms von der Leyen discussed issues related to the Recovery Plan, with President Anastasiades expressing warm thanks to the European Commission and its President for adopting the Recovery Plan that gives a new perspective to the Cypriot economy.

The meeting also discussed issues related to Migration, the response to the coronavirus pandemic, and issues related to dealing with the consequences of crises and disasters, such as the recent fire in mountain areas.

Ms von der Leyen welcomed the start of the implementation of the Recovery Plan for Cyprus, describing it as a very good plan which, among other things, includes the sum of €18 million. In order to strengthen the capacity of the Republic of Cyprus to deal with disasters.

He added that he would transfer to the EU the issue of the need to establish a rescEU base in Cyprus, which would be beneficial for both the Republic of Cyprus and countries in the region.

With regard to the issue of the coronavirus pandemic, Ms von der Leyen congratulated the Cypriot Government on the progress of the vaccination programme and on the state's actions towards a successful response to the pandemic.

With regard to Migration, the Commission'President Committee said that it recognises the problems facing Cyprus as a frontline state and the pressures it is under.
