Authorities on Wednesday evacuated houses near Governor’s beach, as police announced that a section of the Nicosia to Limassol motorway was closed after a fire broke out in the Governor’s beach area.
Citing the fire as the cause, police said the motorway was closed in both directions and some houses evacuated.
The old Nicosia to Limassol road near the Governor’s beach was also closed for traffic, the announcement added.
The closure resulted to increased traffic with authorities calling on people to avoid driving in the area.
The fire service announced that a fire had broken out between Tochni and Kalavasos at around 1.30pm in wild vegetation.
Three staffed firefighting engines as well as mobile firefighting units from the Game and Fauna service are trying to extinguish the blaze.
Efforts to extinguish the fire were also joined by a Forest Department aircraft and two helicopters of the British Bases.
Meanwhile, about an hour after the blaze broke out, the civil defence, collaborating with the police, were working to evacuate some houses in the area.
An action plan was also set up by the civil defence and lifeguards to transport people by sea.
Up to 120 people can be transported this way if necessary, media reported.
