 Filenews 13 July 2021

At the "Red Alert" level, the risk of forest fires remains on Wednesday, July 14, 2021.

A statement from the Department of Forestry states that, as a result, "it is prohibited to light a fire without a permit which constitutes an offence which under the Forestry Act 2012 is punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000 or both penalties together".

Also, "according to the Outdoor Fire Prevention Act of 1988 the penalty provided for is up to 5 years or with a penalty payment of up to €20,000 or both penalties together".

Lighting a fire, for food preparation, is only allowed in the grills of the excursion areas, it is noted.

The Department of Forestry appeals to the public "to be particularly careful during its excursions, fully avoiding actions and activities likely to cause a fire, such as the use of tools or agricultural machinery that produce heat, sparks or flame, such as cutting, grinding, and welding".

It invites citizens if they perceive smoke or fire to call 1407 (Department of Forests) or 112 (Fire Department).
