PAPHOS - CYCLISTS RISK INJURY OR DEATH DUE TO ROAD NETWORK

Filenews 4 July 2021 - by Dora Christodoulou

The creation of an integrated cycling network in the municipal area of Paphos and in the wider peri-urban area is now a high priority issue by those responsible, after finding that cycling is increasingly taking up the interests of citizens, but at the same time that the infrastructure for cycling is non-existent, putting cyclists at risk.

These bodies consider that both the Municipality of Paphos and the wider region constitute a suitable territory for the use of bicycles and in connection with the development of mass urban transport, can gradually lead to the replacement of the private car.

The implementation of this ambitious design, however, is recognized as a difficult issue, since it pre-requirements the design, design and development of an integrated cycling network that will be workable, connective, integrated and sufficient for the Municipality of Paphos and the surrounding areas and which will also present possibilities of connection with the nearby Municipalities or even a little more remote communities, providing safe routes and cycling experience to its users.

The existing network of cycle paths that exists in Paphos is classified as very poor and inadequate and is not used by cyclists who would like to exercise in this way, since by many it is considered dangerous due to technical defects, which create conditions of reduced level of road safety. The issue, according to information of "F", has returned to the fore today, since on three different occasions in the Police Directorate of Paphos there were complaints from motorists about dangerous traffic of cyclists on roads and in particular on the old road Paphos-Limassol, at the height of Kolonis and Achleia, as well as on the road of the Monastery of Agios Neophytos.

These are roads that are points of daily exercise for groups of cyclists and walkers and which, however, do not have the slightest security for the movement of bicycles.
