Incentives for Cyprus to move forward dynamically in the era of electrification announced during a press conference the Minister of Transport Giannis Karousos. The framework includes, among other things, legislative and traffic regulations, the creation of recharging infrastructures and incentives. Cyprus' goal is that by 2030 the new vehicle registrations will be 25% electric cars and in total there will be 36,000 on our roads. Today in Cyprus there are about 250 electric cars.
Giannis Karousos announced a budget of €38.6 million as incentives for the purchase of saloon vehicles, mopeds and motorcycles, commercial taxis and buses as well as electric bicycles. €30 million will be allocated as incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles, €4 million for recharging stations, €3.8 million for the purchase of electric vehicles in the public sector and €790 million for rapid recharging stations.
Recharge stations
The Minister pointed out that, in the context of integrating electrification into the lives of citizens, among others, "28 electric buses will be purchased to serve public passenger transport in city centres. In addition, all motorcycles of the Cyprus Post Office and the Public Service will be replaced with electric cars."
Referring to the development of recharging infrastructure, Mr. Karousos stressed that there are provisions for the development of parking infrastructure and the recharging of electric vehicles in accessible places in both the public and private sectors and added that "by 2026 1,000 charging stations will be developed in cities and at the same time 40 express charging places on motorways and in public places".
In conclusion, Mr Karusos said clearly: "We are changing gears and moving forward. We are forming the Cyprus of Tomorrow. Cyprus is moving on. It's moving electrically.'
