ISRAEL TESTS FIRST VACCINE AGAINST CORONAVIRUS IN . . . A PILL

 Filenews 24 July 2021

While cases of the "Delta" coronavirus mutation are increasing worldwide, causing a headache in the medical community, the Tel Aviv government is ready to conduct the first clinical trials of an oral covid-19 vaccine.

The pill vaccine could boost access to poor countries and be a more "convenient" weapon in scientists' "quest" to treat Covid-19 disease.

As the journal "Forbes" reports, Oravax Medical, a company focused on oral medicine administration, is preparing to begin clinical trials of a Covid-19 vaccine on a tablet.

But first he received the "green light" from the Scientific Committee of Ichilov Hospital, Tel Aviv's main hospital.

The clinical trials - pending final approval by the Israeli Health Ministry in the coming weeks - will serve to promote the vaccine that "you will be able to drink in...a glass", as Nadav Kidron, CEO of Oravax's parent company "Oramed Pharmaceuticals", says in an interview with the Israeli newspaper "The Jerusalem Post".

The first clinical trials will include 24 unvaccinated volunteers.

Each of them will take one or two pills with scientists investigating vaccine safety and effectiveness indicators.

Then, if the findings are encouraging, scientists will conduct larger clinical trials (Phase 3) to determine whether the effectiveness of this vaccine will be successful.

The pill vaccine will be "much more resistant to Covid-19 mutations," Kidron stressed.

The company "Oravax" develops the vaccine-pill as a booster dose for those who have already been vaccinated against Covid-19 disease.

Finally, Nantav Kidron was quick to clarify that the company's priority is to administer the vaccine to a pill for people in vulnerable groups.
