The use of masks and compliance with safety rules, such as social isolation, avoidance of overcrowding and hand hygiene, continues to be recommended by the World Health Organization for fully vaccinated people, as the new highly infectious new strain of SARS-CoV-2 "Delta" virus is rapidly spreading around the world.
The Doctors of the Therapeutic Clinic of the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Theodora Psaltopoulou, Panos Malandrakis and Thanos Dimopoulos (Rector of EKPA) summarize the new guidelines announced by the WHO.
The recommendation of the use of the mask by vaccinated persons is that not the entire population has been vaccinated and such an infectious strain can lead to outbreaks of the virus. In Israel about half of adults infected with the new strain were fully vaccinated with Pfizer's vaccine. This new strain is the fastest strain in its dispersion so far. Its presence has been verified in 92 countries of the world and is likely to be the predominant strain of coronavirus worldwide.
It is also a potentially more deadly strain, because due to its highly infectious nature, it will eventually infect the most vulnerable who will become more seriously, hospitalized and likely end up with COVID-19 infection, especially in areas with low vaccination rates. This strain may lead to more serious symptoms, but also different from the usual symptoms of COVID-19 infection, as we knew them until now. In the US more than 10% of people are now infected with SARS-CoV-2, due to the "Delta" strain and it has already been estimated that more than 600,000 people have already died due to this strain. That is why, the professors of the ECSC conclude, it is important to progress vaccination and to respect the safety rules.
