USE OF FIREWORKS SERIOUS THREAT TO THE ENVIRONMENT

 Filenews 29 June 2021

The Department of Forestry of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment informs the public that the use of fireworks observed at various events can cause fires in forests, rural areas, as well as in premises, while talking about a 'serious threat to the natural environment', particularly in rural and coastal areas, where their use is likely to lead to fires, with unforeseen catastrophic consequences.

In a statement, the Department of Forestry stresses that any person who uses them without obtaining a permit or causing a fire as a result of their use is guilty of an offence and if convicted is subject to a severe prison sentence or a fine or both.

It urges the public not to use fireworks without obtaining permission and where they perceive possible illegality to immediately inform the local Police Station or the Citizen Line on 1460.

Finally, anyone who sees smoke or fire is urged to call 1407 or 112.
