Firefighting forces are on alert again in Paphos province, two days after the nightmarish situation in the Talas-Koili region. For about half an hour in an area near Akoursos, in Pegia, a large fire has been raging out of control which threatens forest land and the property of residents.
Already in the area have rushed and started to operate from the air the flying means, while strong ground forces of the Department of Forests, Fire Department, Thira, Civil Defence and Paphos Provincial Command are also at the site.
The coordination of the operation is this time done by the Department of Forests, since the fire rages less than two kilometres from a forest area so under the laws and regulations it falls under the jurisdiction of that department.
For the time being, according to a competent official, the fire is burning dry grasses and wild vegetation, while superhuman efforts are being made to avoid its expansion towards the forest and towards the residential area of Akoursos, whose inhabitants, taking the example of Tala last Saturday, are ready to leave the area if necessary.
