The departure of Konstantinos Ioannou from the helm of the Ministry of Health should be considered a matter of days. Mr. Ioannou's intention to resign has long been known in the press despite the fact that the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiades, repeatedly invited him to have second thoughts.
However, announcements should not be expected before Thursday, when the election of the new Speaker of the House is expected, while in the press offices the name of the former Speaker of the House, Adamos Adamou, for the position of the new Minister of Health is already "circulating".
For Mr Ioannou himself, a three-year cycle at the Ministry of Health seems to have been closed. It is recalled that he took over the portfolio of the Ministry of Health on 1 March 2018, following the re-election of Nikos Anastasiades to the Presidency of the Republic, facing the greatest challenge in the history of the Republic of Cyprus, which was no other than the implementation of the General Health System (GHS).
In the process, however, apart from the GHS, Konstantinos Ioannou was also confronted with the pandemic. Mr Ioannou was called upon to manage the biggest health crisis of the century.
Konstantinos Ioannou discussed his intention to leave the Ministry of Health with the President of the Republic declaring himself fully satisfied with the minister's work, but agreed that after a stormy journey of three and a half years, it was time for Mr. Ioannou to be released from the crucial post of Minister of Health.
