Filenews 16 June 2021
Traffic checks to deal with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of drugs will continue until 22 June.
In addition to the checks, information/enlightenment will be provided to the public on the risks to the road network from non-compliance with the applicable laws governing the above offences.
Careless driving/distraction, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, have been the first two main causes of fatal road collisions over the past three years, with rates of 20.8% and 27.8% respectively.
It should be noted that around 25% of all road deaths caused on European Union roads are proven to be due to driving under the influence of alcohol, while drug use contributes to a reduction in mental and psychological effort made while driving, but also to a reduction in driver performance.
