The implementation of the National Vaccination Plan against COVID-19 is intensifying, with priority for arranging appointments to be given from tomorrow to the 20-29 age group and with the aim of vaccination at least with the 1st dose of 65% of the population that can be vaccinated by the end of June. Specifically, tomorrow, May 10th, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., appointments will be made available through the Vaccination Portal for people aged 29 and 30. Vaccination coverage and benefits
According to the data to date from vaccinations worldwide, the effectiveness of vaccines is quite high and reaches up to 94%, while cases of COVID-19 infection in fully vaccinated individuals are recorded at a low rate and are almost always mild or asymptomatic.
This finding, as well as the benefits of vaccinations, have also begun to be recorded in Cyprus. Typically, and as the recent national report shows, the cumulative incidence in people aged 20-59 years, who have not yet been vaccinated at a high rate, is three times the cumulative incidence in the age groups of 70-79 years and 80 years and older. At the same time, it is observed that at ages where vaccination coverage is at a fairly advanced stage, the rate of cases recorded is much lower compared to the age groups currently vaccinated and the coverage rate is still small.
The following Table shows the vaccination coverage rate, the percentage of cases and the cumulative incidence by age group:
Age Group Vaccinations Cases Cumulative effect [per
100,000 residents]
The risk of an unvaccinated person getting sick, severely (heavily) or moderately from the virus is too high as opposed to people who have received the vaccine.
At the moment, the vaccine against the disease is the only way to stem the spread and transmission of the virus and limit the occurrence of virus mutations. The encouraging response of citizens to the call for vaccination proves in practice that individual responsibility is identical and coincides with collective responsibility. Everyone's awareness of responsibility towards the whole and society will lead us to the fulfilment of the goal, which is none other than to return to normality safely as soon as possible.
