SPORT - THE MEASURES APPLYING FROM 10 MAY

 Filenews 9 May 2021

The new regulations in force in sport, following the new decree of the Ministry of Health from 10 May announced today by the Cyprus Sports Organisation (CMO).

With regard to sports/training carried out in closed sports facilities (gyms, dance schools, gymnastics, martial arts and all other sports) it is specified that this is permitted provided that on the premises up to 80 m2 do not exceed three persons including the trainer/coach, on site from 81 sq.m. to 200 sq.m. shall not exceed six persons, including the trainer/coach, on premises from 201 sq.m. to 500 sq.m. shall not exceed ten persons, including the trainer/coach and on premises of more than 500 m2 shall not exceed 15 persons, including the trainer/coach.

The above restrictions also apply where the training/training rooms are part of larger sports facilities (e.g. weight room, pilates room, martial arts room, etc.). In other words, these restrictions apply to each room individually. It is recalled that the use of locker rooms and similar infrastructure (showers, common space, benches) is prohibited. It is recalled that the above figures relate exclusively to individual training and not to group contact programmes.

For outdoor and closed swimming pools 50m long or 25m long and since there are racing routes in them, the simultaneous presence of two (2) people per route and up to two (2) coaches per swimming pool is permitted. In the case of no racing routes in the swimming pool (e.g. water polo training), as well as in smaller tanks, the individual training of six (6) persons (including the coach) per swimming pool and with respect to distances is permitted.

For Classical Sports, the individual training of athletes not exceeding six (6) persons per team, including the coach, is permitted in outdoor athletics facilities, provided that the total number of persons per sports facility does not exceed thirty-six (36) persons.

In large football fields, individual training of athletes not exceeding six (6) persons per team, including the coach, is permitted, provided that the total number of persons per sports facility does not exceed eighteen (18) persons.

In archery and shooting courts, individual training of athletes without contact is permitted, as long as they do not exceed eight (8) persons, including the coach, per sports facility.

In smaller outdoor sports facilities (Futsal/Basketball Stadiums, etc.), individual training of athletes without contact is permitted, as long as they do not exceed seven (7) persons, including the coach.

On tennis courts, individual training of athletes without contact is permitted, as long as they do not exceed five (5) persons, including the coach.

It is stressed that, both indoor and outdoor training, it is necessary for coaches/trainers to use a protective mask. It is understood that the non-use of a mask by the coaches/trainers is permitted if they train/exercise with the athletes.

Exercise in the above cases shall be permitted provided that a negative laboratory examination or rapid antigen detection test for COVID-19 disease is presented with sampling carried out within 72 hours, either a vaccination certificate for COVID-19 disease at least at once and provided that a period of three weeks has passed after the date of vaccination, or evidence of release in the case of persons sick with COVID-19 and provided that no period of six months has passed from the date of sampling of their initial positive diagnosis.

The exercise/training of persons aged 12 to 17 years requires either the possession of a negative laboratory examination or a rapid antigen detection test for COVID-19 disease on a weekly basis, or evidence of release in the case of persons ill with COVID-19 disease and provided that no period of six months has passed since the date of sampling of their initial positive diagnosis.

No examination is required for COVID-19 disease in persons under 12 years of age.

It also continues to be allowed to hold sports events (Games) of individual sports without contact (e.g. Athletics, Swimming, Shooting, Cycling) outdoors with specific protocols drawn up by the competent Federation and approved by the Health Services of the Ministry of Health, which, inter alia, must include:

Matches may be held provided that either a negative laboratory test or a rapid antigen detection test for COVID-19 disease is presented with sampling carried out within 72 hours, either a vaccination certificate for COVID-19 disease at least at one dose and provided that a period of three weeks has passed after the date of vaccination, or evidence of release in the case of persons sick with COVID-19 and provided that no period of six months has passed since date of sampling of their initial positive diagnosis.

The Federation designates a Race Safety Officer to ensure that the measures are respected during the race, such as lists of laboratory testing.

At the same time, the maximum number of athletes/coaches/referees/factors for the conduct of matches is determined as follows:

  • Athletics Outdoor Facilities - 50 people
  • Swimming tanks – 2 persons per route and up to two (2) coaches/judges/curators per swimming pool
  • Archery Sports Facilities - 18 people
  • Shooting ranges - 10 people per pitch
  • Tennis Courts - 5 people per installation
