Recognising the important role played by animal welfare organisations in our country and taking another step in the issues of animal protection and welfare, the Council of Ministers decided today to pay a grant of €10,000 to each animal welfare organisation, which maintains a refuge for lives, announced the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and environment, Costas Kadis, after the meeting.
As he explained, the payment of the grant was deemed necessary since recently on the initiative of the Ministry the House approved a bill setting out the minimum characteristics and specifications that animal shelters must have so that the animals hosted in them really prosper.
So the shelters should be upgraded, Mr. Kadis said, adding that the sponsorship approved today by the Cabinet is aimed at supporting animal welfare organizations to this end. "New measures for the protection and well-being of lives in our country are soon announced."
A statement from the Ministry of Agriculture says this is a resumption of emergency sponsorship to shelters for stray animals that did not benefit in 2020. It is added that shelters for stray animals should be in line with the minimum requirements of legislation recently adopted by the Parliament on the initiative of the Ministry, which specifies the characteristics that shelters must have in order to ensure the welfare of the host animals.
