Substances such as drugs have been shown to contribute to reducing the mental and psychological effort made while driving and to reducing the performance and skills of the driver, thus increasing the risk of a traffic collision.
The Cyprus Police place particular emphasis on the phenomenon of driving under the influence of drugs, and with the aim of preventing serious and fatal traffic collisions and increasing the sense of safety on the road network, with daily checks and constant information to the public, it concentrates its efforts to address the problem.
In the last two weeks, between 09 May and today, a total of eleven cases of driving a vehicle under the influence of drugs have emerged following checks by the Police, with eleven drivers, ten men and one woman, aged between 20 and 32, having been positive for a preliminary drug test.
One of the eleven drivers, a 26-year-old man, was stopped on the Larnaca –Ayia Napa motorway, where he was driving his car at a speed of 138 km, instead of up to 100, on the evening of last Monday, May 24.
On the highway he entered trying to escape control by members of the Police who called him to stop for a traffic check while he was driving his car on a road in the area of Pylas. Failing to stop for a check, the 26-year-old driver collided with his vehicle in the back of the patrol vehicle and, continuing his course, entered the highway, where he was eventually stopped by another member of the Police Department.
A second driver of a car, positive for a preliminary drug test, was initially suspended by members of the Police Department for violating the speed limit. This is a 22-year-old man who, shortly after midnight today, was driving his vehicle on the Limassol-Nicosia motorway, at the height of the Tseri area, at a speed of 149 km.
Of the eleven drug driving cases that have arisen in the last two weeks, four cases have arisen in Paphos, three in Limassol, two in Larnaca and two in Nicosia.
