All people over the age of 50 in Britain will be offered a third vaccination against Covid-19 in the autumn in a bid to completely eliminate the threat of infections of the new Crown by Christmas, The Times newspaper reported.
Clinical trials of two options are underway, under the supervision of Chris Witty, England's chief medical minister, the newspaper said.
The first includes vaccines specifically modified to treat new variants. The second is for a third vaccine dose of one of the three already in use: Pfizer/BioNTech, AstraZeneca or Moderna, the newspaper reported.
A total of more than 34.6 million people in Britain have received a first dose of Covid-19 vaccine, according to yesterday's government figures.
510 million Doses
Britain, with a population of 67 million, has concluded agreements on over 510 million doses of eight different vaccines against Covid-19, some of which remain in development.
Britain will buy 60 million additional doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, Health Minister Matt Hancock said last week, in a deal that more than doubles the country's supply ahead of a booster dose program later this year.
Britain has ordered a total of 100 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine, one of three administered in the country.
