BLOOD DONATIONS AND VACCINATIONS

 Filenews 13 May 2021

The Blood Centre informs blood donors that vaccination against COVID-19 does not adversely affect the safety and quality of blood derivatives and does not pose any risk to the health of the blood donor and the transfusion patient.

Based on the standing recommendations of blood carriers, all vaccines, regardless of which virus they concern, have a short period of temporary exclusion from blood donation. This period, in all cases of vaccinations, shall be determined by the type of vaccine. That is why, in the blood donor questionnaire, there has been a point for many years in which the donor is asked whether he has been vaccinated in the last 28 days.

The same data apply in the case of covid-19 vaccinations. More specifically:

  • Vaccination with Pfizer/BioNTechor Moderna : Temporary exclusion of 7 days after each dose.
  • Vaccination with AstraZeneca or Johnson&Johnson: Temporary exclusion 28 days after each dose.

In recent days, there has been a strong paraphilology, particularly on social media, which states that anyone who has been vaccinated against COVID-19 cannot re-offer blood in their life and that the blood of vaccinated blood donors poses a risk to the health of unvaccinated patients. These claims are unsubstantiated and appear to have negatively affected the psychology of blood donors, causing an impact on their blood supply rates. The Blood Center categorically denies these rumors.

Vaccination is the only option "to have our lives back". At the same time blood donation is the only option of our patients who need transfusion "to have their lives back", since the blood cannot be prepared and has no substitute.

It is for this very reason that blood donation must remain outside any scientifically unsubstantiated paraphilology, which may harm this sacred institution, in which our country has been a pioneer over time.

We invite our proud blood donors to continue their arrival for blood supply, observing the short periods of temporary exclusions mentioned above.

Blood Center's message is clear: Don't let the transfusion chain break. Respond to our call. We're going to make it together.
