Air traffic accelerated significantly in the first days of this month, sending upbeat signals ahead of the official summer season, with the first nine days of May accounting for 59% of passenger traffic and almost 44% of flights for the whole of April.
In particular, according to data posted on his personal Twitter account, Transport Minister Giannis Karousos, in the first nine days of May passenger traffic at the two airports of Cyprus amounted to 63,827 passengers (34,650 arrivals and 29,177 departures).
"With steady steps and good weather, we enter the summer season with increased flights and strong airline interest," Yannis Karousos says in his post, adding: "The more we improve our epidemiological data, the better our air connectivity and tourism."
According to Hermes data, passenger traffic in the first nine days of May reached 59% in the whole of the previous month, after a total of 108,030 passengers were transported from the two Cypriot airports in April.
With regard to flights, Mr Karusos notes that in the first nine days of May there were 470 flights at Larnaca and Paphos airports, which represents 43.6% of the total passenger flights carried out in the previous month (1,077).
Based on Hermes statistics, a total of 2,568 passenger flights (93% at Larnaca Airport) were carried out in the period January to April this year, compared to 9,104 in the corresponding period of 2020. It is noted that the pandemic broke out in Cyprus at the beginning of March 2020, while from mid-March until the end of April 2020 a ban on entry to the country was imposed.
