135 NEW CASES, TWO DEATHS - FRIDAY

The Ministry of Health announces that today, May 21, 2021:

  • Two people have died of COVID-19 disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 352.
  • 120 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, 48 of whom are in serious condition.
  • A total of 79,545 disease detection tests have been carried out using the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test.

135 (positivity rate: 0.17%) new cases of COVID-19 disease were identified by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid test, bringing the total number of cases to 71,745

A. Deaths from COVID-19:

The two people who died with the final cause of death attributed to COVID-19 concern:

  • Male, aged 68, who ended up in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.
  • Male, aged 75, who ended up in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with the final cause of COVID-19 is 352, of which:

  • 234 men (66%), and
  • 118 women (34%).

The average age of the deceased from the disease is 77.5 years.

B. Hospitalized:

A total of 120 patients with COVID-19 disease are hospitalized in THE HOSPITALS, 48 of whom are in serious condition.

Of the 48 patients in serious condition, 28 are intubated, four are hospitalized in an Off-Respirator Intensive Care Unit and 16 are in an Increased Care Unit.

In detail the situation in the hospitals is as follows:

C. Positive events COVID-19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 79,545 diagnoses currently carried out, 5,700 were made using the molecular method (PCR) and 73,845 using the antigen rapid test, 135 cases of COVID-19 disease were identified, resulting as follows:

  • 31 cases from 501 samples taken through the process of tracing contacts of already confirmed cases.
  • 13 cases from 1,990 samples taken through a private initiative.
  • 6 cases from 289 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 10 cases from 897 samples tested using the antigen rapid test in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.
  • 75 cases from 72,948 samples tested using the antigen rapid test.

In addition, the following tests were carried out, without the detection of a case:

  • 2,820 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 100 samples taken as part of the referral program by Personal Physicians and special teams control through the Public Health Clinics.
