In a move that can be described as audacious, the Maltese government is moving forward, offering subsidised holidays to tourists who will choose to visit the Mediterranean island next summer for at least three days.
According to the country's Minister of Tourism Clayton Bartolo, travellers wishing to book a five-star hotel worth €200 will receive a grant of €100. In a similar agreement, those who choose a four-star hotel will receive a total of €150 and those who book a three-star hotel will receive €100. Moreover, those who choose to visit hotels on Malta's smallest island, Gozo, three kilometres (two miles) north of the mainland, benefit an additional 10%.
The competing country in Tourism is expected to attract 35,000 tourists from this project, betting on the highest vaccination rate in the European Union it holds, having given at least one dose to 42% of adults.
Malta, like our country, has been irreparably affected by COVID-19 as 27% of the economy comes indirectly and directly from tourism. In 2019 the country attracted more than 2.7 million foreign visitors and in 2020 had a decrease of 80%
