REDUCTION OF CASES IN THE AGE GROUPS VACCINATED

 Filenews 13 April 2021

The effectiveness of vaccination in reducing the risk of disease and hospitalization is demonstrated by the data collected by the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit of the Ministry of Health in relation to cases and hospitalizations.

According to the data, the number of cases in the vaccinated age groups has decreased significantly in recent times, at a time when at younger ages there has been a large increase.

In particular, almost 6 out of 10 cases recorded in the period 1-10 April 2021 concerned people aged 19-50 years. In particular, out of a total of 4,737 cases, 1,008 (21.3%) 19-29, 907 (19.1%) people in the 30-39 age group and 707 (14.9%) people aged 40-49.

In the same period, 579 cases were also recorded in the 50-59 age group, which currently has priority for vaccination under the Ministry of Health's vaccination programme.

On the other hand, in the first 10 days of April, cases in people aged 70 and over , the vast majority of whom have already received at least the 1st dose of the vaccine, have decreased significantly and make up only 4% of the total (188).

The situation recorded in the introduction of COVID-19 patients into hospitals is similar. Typically, in the period 1-10 April, the average number of patients in COVID-19 wards was 62.5 years, and in intensive care units the median age was 60.5 years. These figures reinforce the finding that more and more younger people are developing severe symptomatology and in need of hospitalisation.

The above data confirm the need to promote and continue the vaccination programme as soon as possible.

Vaccinations against COVID-19, which are ongoing and have recently been accelerating, protect the population from getting sick with the virus, while also sharply reducing the chances of hospitalization and recording new deaths. In order to ensure that citizens' health is protected, it is recommended that priority individuals proceed as quickly as possible to the planning of their vaccination, thus reducing the risk of serious disease.
