NEW EU-PFIZER CONTRACT FOR 1.8 billion DOSES OF VACCINE

 Filenews 24 April 2021

The European Union will close in the coming days a vaccine supply agreement providing for the purchase of 1.8 billion doses of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today.

"We are working with Biontech/Pfizer on a new contract," the Commission president said during a press conference.

"This will secure 1.8 billion instalments for 2021-2023. We'll shut it down in the next few days. It will ensure the necessary doses for the administration of booster doses that will increase immunity," said the President of the Commission.

Earlier, a European official had told Reuters that the Union had struck a deal with Pfizer-BioNTech to supply 1.8 billion instalments, the world's largest such contract.

This agreement is sufficient to cover the population of 450 million inhabitants of the European Union for the next two years.

It is the third contract agreed between the Union and the two companies, which have already agreed to supply 600 million instalments this year under the two previous contracts.
