MINISTER OF HEALTH - 82% OF PEOPLE OVER THE AGE OF 80 HAVE BEEN VACCINATED

 Filenews 12 April 2021

"82% of people over the age of 80 and 76% of those in the 70-79 age group were shielded," the Ministry of Health said in a statement, stressing the benefits of vaccination.

"Vaccination against COVID-19 is according to the scientific community the only way to return to more normal conditions as soon as possible. With the increase in vaccination coverage we are taking life back into our own hands, unlocking the economy, mass social gatherings and events, tourism and travel, shielding the Health System. Above all, vaccination does not risk other lives.

The effort to vaccinate the population began on 27 December 2020 with people aged 80 and over and residents on nursing homes. To date, 82% of these people have been vaccinated, with 70% vaccinated with both doses of the vaccine and 12% with the 1st dose of the vaccine. Cyprus is at the fore in the EU in terms of vaccination coverage for people aged 80 and over. At the same time, 76% of people in the 70-79 age group have completed vaccination or taken at least the 1st dose. With this in view of this, Cyprus has achieved the objective set by the European Commission for vaccination coverage of the elderly.

Vaccinations against COVID-19 protect the population from getting sick with the virus, significantly reduce the chances of hospitalization of patients, as well as new deaths, as shown by the data to date. A typical example is the fact that since the end of January, when vaccination on nursing homes was largely completed, the positivity rate has been stable at 0.2%, while in hospitals there has been a large decrease in admissions of people over 75 years of age.

For many of our fellow human beings, every day and every hour that passes and any suspicion of postponing vaccinations of people, especially those in need, involves a risk to their own lives.

That is why the Ministry of Health continues to implement the National Vaccination Plan in accordance with its plans and priority groups, so that as soon as possible a satisfactory vaccination coverage rate has been achieved, which will shield the whole society and allow for a safe restart."
