The first of its kind centre of Geology and Palaeontology is now a fact. On the Akamas peninsula and specifically in the community of Upper Arodes, this unique project, co-financed by the European Fund for Rural Development, was completed. The Centre will operate in the building of the old Municipal Community, which with small interventions was connected to the new building that has been erected and which is part of the whole operation of the project. It includes event and screening areas, changing rooms, sanitary areas and more.
In the extension of the existing building were formed the halls of the exhibits, space for periodic exhibitions, reception and information space and office of the Project Manager. Outdoors there are now spaces for outdoor exhibits, a small space for outdoor events, parking and a bicycle park. All areas are accessible to the disabled.
At the same time, the Centre will be able to host periodic exhibitions on the theme of the project, which can be visited by the public and/or school students, visitors to get to know in more detail the geological history of the Akamas region. It aims to provide information to both locals and visitors about the geology and palaeontology of the Akamas region, the rocks and reserves of the peninsula and in general about the history of the genesis of Cyprus.
The Prefect of Paphos, Mary Lambrou, estimated speaking to "F" that the uniqueness of the project and its innovation will attract a large number of local and foreign travellers. In this context, she stressed, it will particularly support local tourism businesses in the wider region, while also helping to permanently or periodically employ people to run the development.
The project costs €520,000.
