ELEVEN DRUG DRIVING CASES FOUND IN 11 DAYS

 Filenews 10 April 2021

A total of 11 cases of drug driving under investigation have emerged following checks carried out by the Police over the past eleven days. (31/3 - 10/04/2021).

In particular, as stated in a police communication, in the context of the traffic checks carried out on a daily basis by the Police, 11 drivers of vehicles, aged 19 to 34 years, were positive for a preliminary drug test.

In one case, in a vehicle driven by a 22-year-old man in Nicosia yesterday Friday, a quantity of cannabis weighing approximately 25 grams was detected and seized. The driver, after being arrested, was then charged in writing and released.

In another case, a 29-year-old man who was driving his vehicle on the Nicosia– Limassol motorway on 31 March was stopped by members of the Police Headquarters Road Accident Prevention Team for exceeding the speed limit after driving at a speed of 142 km per hour, instead of 100 km per hour, which is the legal limit on this road. The 29-year-old was found to be driving without a driver's licence and without insurance.

Also, on two occasions in Larnaca and one in Limassol, three persons were found to be driving without a safety certificate.

Substances such as drugs and alcohol have been shown to contribute to reducing the mental and psychological effort made while driving and reducing the performance and skills of the driver, thus increasing the risk of a traffic collision.

The Cyprus Police place particular emphasis on this phenomenon and concentrates its efforts to tackle the problem with daily checks and campaigns, but also with constant information to the public, with the aim of preventing serious and fatal road collisions.
