Myth that COVID-19 only damages the lungs, cardiologist Thrasos Konstantinidis told ACTIVE and atzenta, explaining that initially it was believed that the infection with coronavirus was combined with pneumonia but now we know that it can affect other systems and one of them is cardiovascular.
Coronavirus infection causes a systemic inflammatory reaction in the body notes the doctor, this can rekindle arrhythmias. Some patients who have arrhythmias may become more vulnerable and in some cases arrhythmias may be dangerous.
"Because COVID causes the inflammatory reaction, it increases the body's oxygen needs, makes the heart need to function at a higher level, i.e. increase pulses to send blood, oxygen and nutrients to tissues, producing more work than the usual body needs." For heart patients who already have cardiovascular disease, Mr Konstantinidis said, it can cause serious problems. He also added, it can cause myocarditis which in many cases is reversible but can also cause permanent damage.
